Is your phone line being retired?
Phone companies are asking the FCC for permission to shut down copper phone lines across Arizona and New Mexico. Check your line by phone number, ZIP code or town.
Arizona and New Mexico. We don't save the number you enter.
A phone number gives the most exact answer, because it tells us which exchange the line belongs to.
It's not just the phones
These often run on copper lines, and they stop working when the line does.
Fire and alarm panels
Many panels still dial out over a copper line. If the line goes dead, the panel can stop reporting.
Elevator emergency phones
Elevator phones are required to work, and most were installed on copper lines.
Fax machines
Clinics, pharmacies, schools and government offices still fax every day.
Gate and call boxes
Entry gates and call boxes often use a plain phone line.
Card terminals and ATMs
Older terminals dial out to process payments.
Business phone lines
Main numbers, PBX trunks, ISDN and backup lines.
Get a plan for your lines
Tell us a little about your lines. We'll check what you have, what's affected and what it would take to switch, with no obligation. Phones and fax can move to business VoIP; alarm panels, elevators and other devices can move to a cellular line replacement like Ooma AirDial.
Questions
- Does this mean my phone line will be shut off?
- Not necessarily. Carriers file with the FCC to stop offering certain copper services in an area, usually "in portions of" a state. The public notice does not list addresses, so a filing tells you your area could be affected, not that your line is. Your carrier must also give you notice before it changes your service.
- Where does this information come from?
- From discontinuance applications filed with the FCC (the docket numbers link to each filing), matched to the telephone exchange that serves a phone number, ZIP code or town. We check for new filings every day.
- Why does a phone number give a better answer than a ZIP code?
- A phone number tells us exactly which exchange the line belongs to. A ZIP code can span several exchanges, so we use the one nearest the middle of the ZIP.
- What can replace a copper line?
- Phones and fax can move to business VoIP. Alarm panels, elevator phones and other devices can move to a cellular line replacement such as Ooma AirDial. We look at what you have and recommend what fits.
